Germany – the most beautiful hiking trails

Discover selected hiking trails and varied natural regions in Germany – from the low mountain ranges to the Alps.

Hiking in Germany

Germany offers a great variety of hiking trails – from relaxed walks through forests and low mountain ranges to demanding mountain tours in the Alps. Whether nature parks, national parks or impressive rock landscapes: here you will find selected hiking regions and trails as inspiration for your next outdoor adventure.

Best time to go

Which season suits which region?

You can hike in Germany all year round – what matters is which region you choose and when. At higher altitudes the weather and conditions can change quickly, so it is always worth checking the current forecast before a tour.

MAR – MAY

Spring

Low mountain ranges, river valleys and gorges start the season early – waterfalls and ravines carry the most water now. In the Alps there is often still snow at higher altitudes.

JUN – SEP

Summer

The best time for the Alps, the foothills and mountain lakes: long days, open huts, clear high trails. On hot days start early and plan enough water.

SEP – OCT

Autumn

Clear air, colourful forests and wide views – ideal for the low mountain ranges, the heath and coastal trails. The days get shorter, so plan the way back generously.

NOV – FEB

Winter

The coast, the heath and lower areas remain easy to walk and pleasantly quiet. Higher trails are often snow-covered or icy – only with suitable gear and good planning.

Lake Eibsee with the Zugspitze in the Bavarian Alps

Alps, foothills & mountain lakes

In the south of Germany you will find some of the country’s most impressive hikes. Between the Bavarian Alps, the Allgäu, the Zugspitze region and the Berchtesgaden area, mountain lakes, summit views, hut trails and alpine day hikes with strong panoramas await.

Bavaria · Lake Walchen

Herzogstand & Heimgarten

approx. 13.9 km / approx. 6:30 hrs Demanding ↑ approx. 1,270 m

This circular tour over two panoramic summits is one of the best-known hikes in the Bavarian foothills. The ridge path offers wide views of Lake Walchen, Lake Kochel and the surrounding mountains. Scenically strong, but demanding in terms of fitness and only recommended if you are sure-footed.

Bavaria · Allgäu

Schrecksee

approx. 16 km / approx. 8–9 hrs Demanding ↑ approx. 2,120 m total

The Schrecksee is one of the most impressive mountain lakes in the Allgäu. The hike leads through alpine terrain up to a high-altitude lake with a small island and mountain panorama. Because of its length and ascent, it is better suited to experienced hikers.

Bavaria · Lake Königssee

Archenkanzel & Kühroint

approx. 13.1 km / approx. 5:15 hrs Moderate to demanding ↑ approx. 929 m

One of the finest views of Lake Königssee: along forest and mountain paths up to Kühroint and on to the Archenkanzel viewpoint. More sporty than the easy trails by the lake, but with one of the strongest perspectives in the Berchtesgaden area.

Bavaria · Zugspitze region

Eibsee circular trail

approx. 8.8 km / approx. 2–2.5 hrs Easy ↑ approx. 200 m

One of the most beautiful easy trails in the Zugspitze region: once around the clear mountain lake with views of the water, small islands and the Zugspitze. Technically easy and ideal for beginners, families and relaxed day hikes.

Gorge with water in Germany

Gorges, water & special nature trails

Water makes many hikes particularly impressive. In Germany there are numerous routes through gorges, ravines, river valleys and along special nature trails – ideal for varied day hikes with a strong nature experience.

Baden-Württemberg · Black Forest

3 Gorges Tour (Wutach Gorge)

approx. 9.6 km / approx. 3:20 hrs Demanding ↑ approx. 301 m

One of the most impressive gorge landscapes in the Black Forest: forest, narrow paths, watercourses and rocky sections. Narrow trails and slippery spots make the tour more demanding – especially rewarding if you like rugged nature trails.

Bavaria · Oberstdorf & Kleinwalsertal

Breitachklamm circular hike

approx. 5.3 km / approx. 2:20 hrs Moderate ↑ approx. 338 m

One of the best-known gorges in the Allgäu: narrow rock sections, rushing water and steep walls. Well developed, but scenically strong – ideal for a shorter hike with a gorge experience.

Bavaria · Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Partnachklamm & Graseck

approx. 6.2 km / approx. 1:55 hrs Easy to moderate ↑ approx. 258 m

An impressive natural highlight and an easily manageable tour in one: inside the gorge the path follows the Partnach through narrow rock walls, tunnels and roaring water sections – afterwards the landscape opens up towards Graseck.

Bavaria · Lake Königssee

Malerwinkl circular trail

approx. 3.8 km / approx. 1:30 hrs Easy ↑ approx. 170 m

A short, easily manageable hike at Lake Königssee: through forest sections to attractive viewpoints looking over the lake and mountains. Ideal for beginners, families and relaxed day trips.

Rocks and viewpoints in the low mountain ranges

Rocks, viewpoints & low mountain ranges

Germany’s low mountain ranges offer many varied hikes with rocks, forests, viewpoints and high trails. These regions show that strong hiking experiences are not only found in the Alps.

Saxony · Elbe Sandstone Mountains

Bastei & Schwedenlöcher

approx. 4.6–6 km / approx. 2–3 hrs Easy to moderate ↑ approx. 215 m

One of the best-known tours in Saxon Switzerland: sandstone rocks, forest paths, stepped sections and fine views into the Elbe valley. Particularly strong is the combination of the Bastei bridge, rock landscape and viewpoints over a short distance.

Baden-Württemberg · Upper Black Forest

Feldbergsteig

approx. 12.4–12.6 km / approx. 4:30–5 hrs Moderate to demanding ↑ approx. 500–580 m

Around the highest summit of the Black Forest: narrow paths, forest sections, open high ground and wide views – in good visibility as far as the Alps. Varied and in places more alpine than you would expect in the Black Forest.

Harz · Saxony-Anhalt/Lower Saxony

Brocken via the Goetheweg

approx. 16–18 km / approx. 5–6 hrs Moderate ↑ approx. 330–360 m

One of the best-known routes in the Harz: from Torfhaus through forest and moorland up to the highest mountain in northern Germany. Technically manageable, but a full day hike because of its length.

North Rhine-Westphalia · Teutoburg Forest

Dreibäche circular trail & Externsteine

approx. 10.8 km / approx. 3–4 hrs Moderate

Forest landscapes, small stream valleys and the striking Externsteine: the well-known rock formations give the hike a special character – enough variety for a fine day hike in the low mountains.

Water tower and dune landscape on the North Sea island of Langeoog

Heath, coast & quiet landscapes

The north of Germany shows a completely different side of hiking. Instead of alpine summits it is about openness, heathland, coastal forests, chalk cliffs, mudflats and quiet landscapes with a strong sense of nature.

Lower Saxony · Lüneburg Heath

Totengrund & Wilseder Berg

approx. 13 km / approx. 3–4 hrs Easy to moderate

The Lüneburg Heath at its most beautiful: open heathland, small forest sections and viewpoints over the wide cultural landscape. Technically manageable, but a proper day hike because of its length.

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern · Fischland-Darß-Zingst

Darßer Weststrand & Darß forest

approx. 15.8 km / approx. 4.5 hrs Easy

Coastal forest, natural beach and national park landscape: particularly attractive is the change between forest, dunes, beach and the Baltic Sea. Technically easy, a full day hike because of its length.

Rügen · Jasmund National Park

Cliff trail Sassnitz–Königsstuhl

approx. 12 km / approx. 3–4 hrs Moderate

One of the most beautiful coastal hikes in Germany: along the chalk coast through beech forest, with ever-changing views of the Baltic Sea, the steep coast and bright chalk cliffs. Particularly impressive around the Königsstuhl.

Lower Saxony · Cuxhaven

Mudflat walk to Neuwerk

approx. 10–12 km / approx. 3.5–4 hrs Moderate

A special nature experience on the North Sea: at low tide across the seabed to the island of Neuwerk – mudflats, openness and the coast from a completely different perspective. Important: tide-dependent, only undertake well planned or with a guide.
